How will you be supported and trained up across your doctoral studies in the School?
Expert and supportive supervision lies at the heart of any successful PhD. In the School of Geography, you will normally work with two supervisors who will provide you with clear guidance and support throughout your studies. You can expect to meet regularly with your supervisors and at least 10 times per academic year.
The School aims to provide access to training that supports our postgraduate researchers in developing all the skills necessary to successfully complete their programme of research as well as those that support them in their chosen career pathways.
Academic supervisors undertake a research training assessment as a part of the induction to the School’s postgraduate research programme. Training requirements will depend on programme of research, previous experience and according to funding awarding body.
Queen Mary’s Doctoral College provides further training opportunities, events and activities to further develop student’s research skills. Some of the training opportunities provided by Doctoral College are Cohort training days, skills development training, wellbeing for researchers and research integrity training. All postgraduate students are encouraged to consider opportunities for teaching within the School as a part of their professional development. Training is provided through the Centre for Academic and Professional Development and a pathway to Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy is available via the Queen Mary Academy Teaching Recognition programme.
